Your hair is likely damaged if it feels dry and rough, tangles easily, breaks or snaps, has split ends, and looks dull instead of shiny. Healthy hair feels smooth, stretches without breaking and reflects light. The more of those bad signs you notice, the more damage there is.

Most damage builds up slowly from color, heat and daily friction, so it is easy to miss until hair starts breaking. This guide walks through the clear signs, two quick tests you can do at home, and how to work out whether your hair needs protein or moisture.

What are the signs of damaged hair?

Damaged hair usually shows several of these signs at once:

  • Dryness. Hair feels parched soon after washing and does not hold moisture.
  • Split ends. The tips fray or split into two, a clear sign the strand is breaking down.
  • Breakage. Short broken pieces appear, or strands snap when you comb or style.
  • Rough texture. Hair feels coarse or straw-like instead of smooth when you run fingers down it.
  • Tangles and knots. Damaged strands catch on each other, so hair knots easily.
  • Frizz and flyaways. Lifted, roughened strands will not lie flat.
  • Dullness. Hair looks flat and matte rather than shiny, because a rough surface scatters light.
  • Loss of elasticity. Healthy hair stretches a little and springs back; damaged hair either snaps at once or stretches and stays limp.

A single sign on its own may just be a dry spell. Several together point to real damage that a repair treatment can help with.

How can you test if your hair is damaged at home?

Two simple tests tell you a lot in a couple of minutes.

The stretch test. Take a single wet strand and gently pull it from both ends. Healthy hair stretches a little and bounces back. Damaged hair either snaps almost at once, or stretches like gum and stays limp without returning. Both results mean the strand has lost strength.

The float test. Drop a clean, dry strand into a glass of water and wait 2 to 3 minutes. Very porous, damaged hair soaks up water and sinks, while healthier hair tends to float longer. Sinking fast suggests the cuticle is lifted and letting moisture rush in and out.

Neither test is perfect, but together they confirm what the visible signs suggest. If your hair snaps on the stretch test and sinks on the float test, it is damaged and would benefit from repair.

Does your hair need protein or moisture?

Damaged hair is short on one of two things: protein or moisture. Knowing which decides the kind of treatment to reach for, and the stretch test is the quickest way to tell.

  • If a wet strand stretches a lot, feels mushy or gummy, and stays limp: your hair needs protein. It has lost the structure that holds it firm, so a protein or keratin treatment helps rebuild it.
  • If a wet strand snaps quickly with little stretch and feels dry and brittle: your hair needs moisture. The strand is stiff and parched, so a hydrating mask or conditioner helps.

Many people need a mix of both, since heavy damage drains protein and moisture together. A repair mask that combines keratin with hydrating ingredients covers both sides, which is why it suits most damaged hair. If you are unsure, start with a balanced repair mask and watch how your hair responds.

What to do once you know your hair is damaged

If the signs and tests point to damage, the fix is a weekly repair treatment. For hair that needs both protein and moisture, a keratin mask like the Intensive Restructure Mask from Gentlemen Republic is a solid starting point.

Part of the Incanto Di Donna line, it pairs keratin to rebuild structure with vitamin E and panthenol to soften and hydrate, so it works on both sides of damage in one 5 to 10 minute treatment, 1 to 2 times a week.
